Next.js at Enterprise Scale: Architecture Patterns

Next.js has become the default choice for enterprise web applications. But scaling a Next.js codebase across multiple teams requires deliberate architecture.

Our recommended patterns:

Feature-based folder structure — Organize by domain (auth, billing, dashboard) not by type (components, hooks, utils). Each feature owns its components, hooks, API routes, and tests.

Server Components by default — Use Client Components only where interactivity is required. This reduces bundle size by 40-60% and improves Core Web Vitals scores.

API route colocation — Keep API routes next to the features they serve. Avoid a monolithic /api directory that becomes a bottleneck.

Shared design system — Extract UI primitives into a separate package with Storybook documentation. Version it independently from application code.
